I have my mic what should I do now? Well, buy a mic stand.
Simple? Yes and no. Mic stands range from £10 to
nearly £100 (if you look hard enough!). Now, £10 stands
may last you years and hold the mic in the right place etc if
you look after them. Then again being abused (it looks
good to the audience) and thrown in the back of the van with
amps racks will take it's toll. As far as design is
concerned, there are two choices straight or boom. It you
play guitar, or any other intrument (except harmonica/kazoo/nose
flute) you probably need a boom to get over your guitar/whatever
and to your mouth. Then decide whether you want an Argos
special for £12 every 12 months; or a Beyer or Ultimate stand
for £50-£100 which should last your career. In most situations, the venue/engineer will give you a lead. If you are self contained or just paranoid, buy a good quality lead (XLR). Again you get what you pay for. A £5 XLR with unbranded plugs and cables will work, but will break sooner and may well affect your signal. As a rule, head nearer the top of the range of leads - Neutrik connectors are basically essential, though there are other good makes out there, and a good OFC cable is a must - go for Van Damme or Klotz if you can. Custom made cables are available at Superior Sound.
